Alfa Romeo Giulia GTAm Arrives At Imola For Its Big Debut This Weekend

Alfa Romeo is setting up the international dynamic debut event of the new Giulia GTAm, which will take place at Imola on Sunday, April 18, during the second round of the 2021 F1 World Championship.

The new Alfa Romeo Giulia GTAm, which will be presented in the brand’s classic red livery, already visited the pit lane for a photo opportunity alongside Alfa Romeo F1 drivers Kimi Räikkönen and Antonio Giovinazzi.

Both drivers have participated in the development of the Giulia GTAm, helping Alfa Romeo to fine-tune its most aggressive and powerful product in decades. In addition, the Italian carmaker has collaborated with the Sauber Engineering Team for some of the model’s technical features, including the center-locking 20-inch alloy wheels, and various carbon-fiber parts.

The new Alfa Romeo Giulia GTAm is the even more hardcore variant of the Giulia GTA, featuring things like a more aggressive aero kit with a larger front splitter and a giant carbon-fiber rear wing, a rear bench delete, a roll bar, no door panels, and straps instead of regular door handles for that ultimate race-car-for-the-road feeling.

The twin-turbo 2.9-liter V6 engine has been upgraded to produce 532 HP (540 PS) instead of the Quadrifoglio’s 503 HP (510 PS) and is accompanied by a model-specific Akrapovic exhaust system for an “unmistakable” soundtrack.  While Alfa  Romeo hasn’t released the full figures yet for the GTAm, it says that the slightly less mad Giulia GTA will hit 62 mph (100 km/h) from a standstill in just 3.6 seconds, thanks to a new Launch Control and a comprehensive diet that removed 100 kg (220 lbs) out of its weight figure.

Alfa Romeo is going to build just 500 examples of the new Giulia GTA and GTAm combined.

Alfa Romeo CEO Unhappy With Tonale’s PHEV Powertrain Performance, SUV Delayed By 3 Months

The production-ready Alfa Romeo Tonale was supposed to be shown this fall, yet the unveiling was reportedly pushed back by three months. That’s how much time the team behind the project needs to improve the performance of the powertrain, at the request of CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato.

Peugeot’s former head honcho, who now leads Alfa Romeo into the Stellantis era, is said to have demanded “better performance” from the plug-in hybrid assembly. This was confirmed to AutoNews by an anonymous insider, and the apparent three-month delay information, which will allegedly push it back to early 2022, came via supplier sources.

Built on FCA’s Small Wide LWB 4×4 platform, which also underpins the Jeep Compass, the Tonale will become Alfa’s entry-level SUV, slotting under the Stelvio. It was previewed by a concept car at the Geneva Motor Show two years ago, and it should mirror its overall styling, albeit with new lighting units at both ends and traditional side mirrors instead of cameras, as leaked imaged have shown.

Details surrounding the powertrain family are a well-preserved secret, but since it shares its construction with the Compass, it might launch with its plug-in hybrid unit(s), though probably with more oomph. Jeep’s compact SUV, which was recently facelifted in Europe, is offered with 190 PS (187 HP / 140 kW) and 240 PS (237 HP / 177 kW) and an 11.4 kWh battery. The Tonale will have an electric-only range of a few tens of kilometers. A high-performance Quadrifoglio version was apparently ruled out.
