The new Mercedes-AMG SL breaks cover. Official photos and data

The new Mercedes-AMG SL breaks cover with V8 engines and a range-topping variant of 585 horsepower under the hood of the SL 63. The new model will carry over from where the Mercedes-AMG GT Roadster left off.

The first-ever Mercedes-AMG SL developed independently by AMG is equipped with everything that Mercedes has today. The AMG Active Ride Control suspension, rear-axle steering, the optionally available AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system and the Digital Light are on the menu.

The all-new SL comes, for the beginning, with the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 in two output options. The entry-level variant  AMG SL 55 4Matic+ – if there is anything entry-level about it – is the one with 476 HP and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque. The customers who need more can go for the 585-HP SL 63 4Matic+ version with a peak torque of 800 Nm (590 lb-ft).

The first runs from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.9 seconds, while the latter is 0.3 seconds faster. Their top speed is of 295 km/h (183 mph) and 315 km/h (196 mph), respectively.

A  nine-speed automatic transmission and the company’s 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system transfer resources to all four corners. The latter is a first in the SL history. The AMG Speedshift MCT 9G has a wet start-off clutch instead of a torque converter. Thus, fast multiple downshifts are possible and in Sport, Sport+ and Race modes (standard on the SL 63). The Automatic throttle blipping function is available to provide a fascinating experience when changing gears.

The new Mercedes-AMG SL, in line for E Performance technology

Mercedes-AMG will grant its new convertible with the E Performance technology. That will carry over the top-of-the-range position when it hits the market. As incredible as it may sound, it might go as far as 800 horsepower. The first to get the tech, the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 4-Door Coupe S E Performance, received 843 HP. But that might just be too much for the convertible. In the future the base version will be the 3 liter six inline cylinder.

Both versions comes as standard with rear axle steering that improves handling. The system allows the steering of the rear wheels in the opposite direction from those on the front axle at speeds up to 100 km/h (62 mph) with an angle of 2.5 degrees. At speeds higher than 100 km/h, the rear wheels point in the same direction as the front ones, with a maximum steering angle of 0.7 degrees.

Integral steering not only provides a smaller turning circle at speeds below 100 km/h, but is also sharper because the front-wheel steering ratio is only 12.8: 1 compared to 14.2: 1 without integral steering.

The Mercedes-AMG SL comes with six driving modes

Six driving modes are available onboard. Drivers can select from Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Individual and Race. The Mercedes-AMG SL 63 gets them as standard. Meanwhile, those who go for the “tamed” SL 55 have to tick the AMG Dynamic Plus Package to get them.

The SL 55 AMG 4Matic + is equipped as standard with the AMG Ride Control steel spring suspension. Meanwhile, Mercedes prepared the AMG Active Ride Control adaptive suspension for the SL 63 4MATIC+. It also features the active stabilizer bars operated by a hydraulic mechanism and not by a mechanical one.

For the first time, a Mercedes-AMG series model is equipped with a five-link front axle. The rear axle also sports a five-link multilink suspension. An electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential is standard for the SL 63 4Matic + and optional, included in the AMG Dynamic Plus Package, for the SL 55 4Matic+.

Both versions come standard with composite disc brakes. It is easy to tell the two apart. The SL 55 4Matic + displays red brake calipers, while the SL 63 4MATIC+ shows them in yellow. For extra money, customers can also tick the high-performance AMG ceramic composite discs that have brake calipers in an extravagant bronze finish.

The Mercedes-AMG SL – Gracious design

The new Mercedes-AMG SL measures 4,705 millimeters (185.2 inches) in length and features a wheelbase of 2,700 millimeters (106.3 inches).

The model comes with a sleek design. It all starts – as expected – with AMG’s Panamericana radiator grille with vertical slats, flanked by narrow elongated headlights spreading towards the fender flares. With a long hood, short overhangs and muscular shoulder line, plus the canvas roof, the car has a gracious, yet powerful silhouette.

There are 19-inch standard wheels for the SL 55, but customers can pay extra for the 20- and 21-inch ones.

Compared to the old model, the torsional rigidity is 18% higher. The transverse rigidity is 50% higher than the already great value of the AMG GT Roadster. The longitudinal rigidity also goes up by 40%.The new platform has major advantages over the former, which was shared with the E-Class family. It is lighter (the weight of the plain body is only 270 kg) and the center of gravity is lower.

The highly enticing design accompanies a high-tech cabin with a 2+2 seating layout, after the absence of it for more than 30 years. People of up to 1.5 meters can sit in the back or taller if they are willing to double up in there. When not occupied, the seats can convert into storage space. Sports seats come standard, while the performance ones are optional.

As seen in the photos that Mercedes released ahead of the official reveal, the SL comes with the 11.9-inch portrait-style adjustable screen from 12 to 32 degrees in the center console to trick the sunlight when driving with the top down. The 12.3-inch digital cluster, the MBUX system, and the head-up display round up the futuristic yet elegant ambiance onboard.

The Mercedes-AMG SL convertible has a soft top that can close in 15 seconds

Mercedes dropped the rigid top in the favor of the canvas one. The mechanism is 21 kilograms lighter than the previous one, thus reducing the weight of the car and lowering the center of gravity. It only takes 15 seconds for the soft top to go up or down, at speeds of up to 60 km/h (37 mph).

The features of the active aerodynamics

Mercedes-AMG SL boasts active aerodynamics. It all starts with the retractable tail wing elegantly integrated into the boot lid. It can be adjusted in 5 positions from 80 km/h upwards to optimize cornering stability or reduce drag.

A two-piece active air control system, designated Airpanel, consists of two parts: the first one operates with vertical louvers hidden behind the lower air intake in the front apron, while the second one is located behind the upper air intake which has horizontal louvers. Normally, both are closed. but when more cooling is needed the louvers spring open (the second one only from 180 km/h above).

Optionally, an active aerodynamic element can be ordered. It will find room in the underbody in front of the engine. This carbon profile, which weighs about 2 kilograms, drops by about 40 mm at speeds of over 80 km/h, depending on the chosen AMG driving mode. This creates a Venturi effect that practically presses the car on the road and reduces the ascending forces from the front axle.

Doug DeMuro test-drives the iconic Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing

The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing was a dream car decades ago when it came out. It was a race car for the road. It was light and aerodynamic, classy and potent. And it still keeps its reputation today. Car vlogger Doug DeMuro got his hands on one.

You can’t just go out and buy a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing. Only 1,400 such cars rolled off the assembly line of the plant in West Germany, in the company of the 1,858 roadster units. Not many have survived the decades. And those who did, are either in mint condition and worth millions of dollars, or look like they should go straight to the scrap yard. The restoration would go as far as a million dollars probably. When it came into the world, in 1955, the 300 SL Gullwing started at DM 29,000 and $6,820 in the U.S.

A tubular spaceframe, a 3.0-liter inline-six engine and 240 horsepower, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing had a road behavior that confirmed the looks. And when the doors sprang upwards, it was like a magic trick. There wasn’t a single head that didn’t turn.

Now the famous car vlogger Doug DeMuro takes the iconic automobile for a spin. For him, the hardest part is to fit in the driver’s seat over the high threshold. Not even the folding steering wheel helps much.

There are so many dials on the dashboard and none of them is labeled. You just have to guess your way through them. An ignition key slot hardly noticeable is right there in the dashboard as well, next to the lights control switch. But not the high beam. That was controllable from the footwell, the driver had to press the switch with his left leg. There is though something you can’t help noticing. Stirling Moss’s signature is right in front of the passenger’s seat.

The turn signal lever is on the right side, where Mercedes is currently fitting the gear lever.

Doug DeMuro explains why the doors of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing do not open

As strange as it may seem, the windows do not roll down. The curvy shape of the doors would not allow it. But they pop out instead and the driver can store them in the trunk, for example.

A little design detail is mind-blowing. From outside you can put your hands through the roof openings in the back of the gullwing doors. They are there to evacuate the air and equalize pressure when you open and close the doors.

But does Doug DeMuro actually go driving the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing? Yes, he hits the road in the iconic car. With his head just millimeters down from the ceiling and feeling the space around him is pretty tight, he spins the thin elegant steering wheel and finds the car is easier to drive than he thought.

Check the video below for his experience with the classic.

Mercedes replaces the designo label with Manufaktur

Mercedes quits on the design label, replacing it with the more generous Manufaktur. Until now, the Manufaktur customization was only available for the G-Class.

From now on, the extras will also be available for the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, the S-Class, CLS, and Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe. Therefore customers will have the opportunity to choose from various exterior paint options, new interior trims, materials, and colors.

Historical colors, such as the Manufaktur Graphite Grey, first available for the iconic Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing, are also on the menu. Customers can also tick the boxes for Graphite Metallic or Olive Metallic from the ‘80s. The China Blue, extremely popular in the E-Class and S-Class range back in the ‘90s, are also included.

Manufaktur has several options in store for those who prefer something more modern. The label has designed Cashmere White Magno, Night Black Magno and Kalahari Magno, all with matte finishes, especially for them.

Onboard the models, future owners can go for the piano lacquer or wood. Deep White/Black Exclusive Nappa leather interior and the Pastel Yellow/Black combo are back in the S-Class lineup. There are also options for the Truffle Brown/Black or Yacht Blue/Black.

Mercedes-Benz also offers the Manufaktur headliner

Another noble highlight that the customers can additionally select is the Manufaktur headliner entirely in nappa leather with double-stitched Maybach rhombus.

The Manufaktur badge will be visible on the center console and there will be chrome lettering on the rear window shelf. An LED tech-based surround lighting system, that provides animated patterns when the doors open, rounds up the atmosphere.

The program also brings the hand-crafted two-toned Manufaktur Leather Steering Wheel onboard.

Mercedes is planning on taking the new label into the EQ electric subbrand as well. The Mercedes-AMG high-performance models will also join the 4-Door Coupe with further customization options.

The premium carmaker will drop the designo label from its lineup.

Deals aplenty available on new 2019 trucks

Consumers considering buying a pickup should consider new 2019 trucks nearly two nearly years old.

The reason: The COVID-19 pandemic stalled production of 2020 models for manufacturers and resulted in the temporary closing of “brick-and-mortar” dealerships. Sales suffered and deals are prevalent.

According to iSeeCars.com, the online automotive search engine and research website based in Woburn, Mass., there’s a 10.8 percent industry average of new 2019 vehicles still in inventory.

The 2019 Nissan Titan, 2019 Ford Ranger and 2019 Ram Pickup Classic are all on a dubious list of vehicles with the most 2019 inventory remaining.

2019 trucks available with good deals

The Nissan Titan is fourth on the list with 43.7 percent of its 2019 inventory remaining. The Ford Ranger is fifth in the top-10 with 41.9 percent of its 2019 inventory left, followed by the Ram Pickup Classic seventh (39.4 percent).

“These cars provide opportunities for buyers to get a good deal on a new vehicle and are likely to come with generous incentives,” the website’s analysts wrote.

iSeeCars.com analyzed its national inventory of more than 1 million new cars for sale to determine which models have the inventory the remaining 2019 models.

“A surplus of vehicles from the 2019 model year might remain on dealer lots because a car’s popularity is declining because car buyers want to wait for an upcoming redesign, or because dealers simply have too much inventory,” said Phong Ly, the iSeeCars.com CEO.

The top-20 vehicles on the list all have at least 20 percent of 2019 inventory available. Of course, not all of the list’s vehicles are available in every state.

Here’s the list of the top-20 vehicles in the United States with the largest percentage of new vehicles remaining in inventory from 2019.

1. Dodge Grand Caravan, 66.3 percent; 2. Chrysler 300 (50.9); 3. Dodge Journey (45.8); 4. Nissan Titan (43.7); 5. Ford Ranger (41.9); 6. Audi Q7 (40.9); 7. Ram Pickup 1500 Classic (39.4); 8. Volkswagen Atlas (37.1); 9. Alfa Romeo Giulia (32.8); 10. Chevrolet Impala, 31.8.

11. Dodge Challenger (30.2); 12. Nissan Sentra (27.1); 13. Volkswagen Golf GTI (27.1); 14. Ford Mustang (23.1); 15. Mitsubishi Outlander (22.7); 16. Honda Civic (Coupe) (22.7); 17. Nissan Kicks (22.5); 18. Dodge Charger (21.6); 19. Honda Passport (21.2); 20. Nissan Maxima (20.5).

Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR “722” wins “Best in show” at the first Concours Virtual

The Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR 722, driven by Sir Stirling Moss at the 1955 Mille Miglia wins Best in Show at the first Concours Virtual. The virtual event replaces the Concours d’Elegance in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Anyone with an internet connection could peek at the iconic classics and could watch the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR 722 being crowned Best in Show. Virtual spectators were also able to choose from the 245 automobiles competing in 18 classes. They could as well vote for their personal favorite.

Pebble Beach chairman Sandra Button, Duke of Richmond, car designers Peter Stevens and Marek Reichman were part of the panel of judges that selected the winners.  This is how the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR “722” turned out to be Best in Show. The racer comes with quite a story. Back in 1955, with Stirling Moss and Denis Jenkinson onboard, the car won the famous Mille Miglia road race. They completed the legendary 1,000-mile route in just ten hours, seven minutes and 48 seconds. The average speed of the run was of 160 km/h (99 mph). That was quite impressive at that time, 75 years ago.

A Bertone-styled 1970 Lancia Stratos HF Zero came second in the Concours Virtual. Displayed at the Turin Show in 1970, the prototype is part of a private collection that the owner occasionally drives to impress the crowds.

There was a 1970 Porsche 917K Salzburg, belonging to a United Kingdom-based private collector, in the third place. It is a car that took home the 1970 Le Mans 24 Hour race trophy. It was the first endurance race first ever victory to Porsche.

A 1948 Talbot Lago T26 Grand Sport by Figoni & Falaschi won the “People’s Choice Best in Show”.

Concours Virtual as charity event

The Concours Virtual opened its virtual gate on the 30th of June and closed them on the 9th of August. The event aimed to raise 100,000 pounds for UNICEF children charity. The money will go to children affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Have 20K or 25K for a truck? Toyota tops watchdog’s list

Toyota tops the list for most reliable and best buy in a new survey for consumers in the market for a used truck with a budget of less than $20,000 and less than $25,000, according to iseecars.com.

The car search engine, based in Woburn, Mass., helps shoppers find the best car deals by providing key insights and valuable resources.

The Toyota Tacoma is among the most reliable trucks available.

iSeeCars analyzed more than 6.1 million used cars sold from October 2019 through March 2020 from model years 2011 onward.

Toyota used pickup get top marks

Cars previously determined to be among the Longest-Lasting Cars and had an overall crash test rating of 4.0 or higher from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) were eligible for further analysis.

The average price of each model was calculated for each model year, and the latest model year with an appropriate average price for each budget was determined.

Among the used pickup trucks for sale under $20,000, the most reliable and best buys include the 2012 Tacoma, the 2011 Tundra, and the 2013 Chevrolet Silverado.

Two full-size pickups make the list: the 2011 Toyota Tundra and the 2013 Chevrolet Silverado.

“Toyota trucks are known for their reliability and longevity, which makes the Tundra a practical choice,” said Phong Ly, co-founder of iseecars.com. “The Tundra is a capable hauler with a powerful engine and strong towing capability. Those with a $20,000 budget can buy the slightly newer 2013 Chevrolet Silverado, which is known for its pleasant ride and powerful engine.”

On average, consumers pay more for used pickup trucks than for any other vehicle segment with an average used price of $29,705.

Here are the top picks for used pickup trucks, respectively, for less than $20,000 and $25,000:

2012 Toyota Tacoma, $18,963
2011 Toyota Tundra, $19,064
2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, $19,937

2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, $22,206
2013 Toyota Tundra, $23,176
2015 Toyota Tacoma, $23,958
2014 Ford F-150, $22,553
