Mary Barra Says GM Can Catch Tesla In EV Sales By 2025

General Motors chief executive Mary Barra says the car manufacturer can catch Tesla in U.S. sales of electric vehicles by 2025.

GM intends on launching no less than 30 electric vehicles by 2025 and while recently speaking during CNBC’s Squawk Box, Barra expressed confidence in her belief that the company will establish itself as the EV leader.

“I am very comfortable, because when people get into these vehicles, they are just wowed,” she said. “So we will be rolling them out and we’re going to just keep working until we have No. 1 market share in EVs.”

Tesla currently dominates the electric vehicle space in the United States. In fact, the automaker accounted for 79 percent of all EVs sold in the U.S. throughout 2020. However, research and forecasting company HIS Markit says Tesla’s U.S. share of EV sales will drop to 56 percent throughout 2021 and fall to approximately 20 percent in 2025.

Speaking with CNBC, LMC Automotive added that sales of EVs, including plug-in hybrids, will account for less than 4 percent of vehicle sales across the country this year. The research firm suggests that EVs will make up 34.2 percent of new U.S. vehicle sales by 2030, with 4.1 percent of those sales being for plug-in hybrids.

A key pillar in GM’s EV expansion goals is their plans to install up to 40,000 Level 2 EV chargers across the United States and Canada as part of a $750 million investment.

GM Will Reportedly Build Honda EV In Mexico, Acura EV In Tennessee

General Motors is set to build a Honda EV and an Acura EV in its Mexico and Tennessee plants respectively.

According to individuals with knowledge of the plans, the all-electric Honda in question will take the shape of a crossover and be built in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico, the same location where the Chevrolet Blazer and Equinox are produced. Meanwhile, GM will handle production of an electric Acura crossover at its factory in Spring Hill, Tennessee, the same location where the electric Cadillac Lyriq will be built.

It is understood that both the Honda and the Acura EVs will be similar in size to the Lyriq.

GM’s EV platform

Both the Honda and Acura are set to use GM’s Ultium batteries that have been rated at up to 450 miles of range, Auto News reports. Neither GM nor Honda would comment on the report.

The two automakers announced an agreement to jointly develop two Ultium-powered electric vehicles back in April 2020. In that announcement, the companies confirmed that the Honda and Acura EVs would feature exteriors and interiors designed exclusively by Honda while using GM’s global EV platform.

“This collaboration will put together the strength of both companies, while combined scale and manufacturing efficiencies will ultimately provide greater value to customers,” executive vice president of American Honda Motor Rick Schostek said at the time. “This expanded partnership will unlock economies of scale to accelerate our electrification roadmap and advance our industry-leading efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”

Sales of the Honda and Acura EVs are expected to begin for the 2024 model year in the U.S. and Canadian markets.

Mark Wahlberg Buys Second Ohio GM Dealership, Renames It Mark Wahlberg Buick-GMC

Hollywood star Mark Wahlberg has diverted some of the revenue from his acting career into several business ventures, including a Chevrolet dealership he bought two years ago in Columbus, Ohio.

Now, it looks like Wahlberg has acquired a taste for GM car dealerships as he bought another one, a Buick-GMC store located right across the street from Mark Wahlberg Chevrolet.

As with the first acquisition, Wahlberg partnered with Michigan dealer Jay Feldman to purchase the Haydocy Buick-GMC dealership, which has been promptly renamed Mark Wahlberg Buick-GMC. The transaction also included an Airstream and RV dealership in Columbus, which from now on is known as Mark Wahlberg Airstream & RV.

“Columbus has been so welcoming and it just made sense to grow our automotive platform here,” Wahlberg said in a statement cited by AutoNews. “The Haydocy family has been wonderful to work with during this transition and Jay and I are looking forward to doing big things here,” the actor added.

Wahlberg’s associate Jay Feldman, who is CEO of Feldman Automotive Group, said that purchasing the Buick-GMC store across the street from Mark Wahlberg Chevrolet was “a perfect fit” and that they love the Columbus market.

Wahlberg and Feldman met in 2013 in Detroit while the actor was filming the fourth installment of the Transformers movie series. In addition to car dealerships, they also are business partners in several Wahlburgers restaurants. Wahlberg’s business portfolio also includes a movie production company, health and wellness company, and a water brand.
